Cittaslow

Cittaslow originated in 1999, proposed by Paolo Saturnini, the former mayor of the town of Greve in Tuscany, Italy, inspired by the Slow Food movement. The Slow Food revolution itself was initiated in 1986 by Carlo Petrini, an Italian, in opposition to the fast food giant McDonald’s opening a store near the Spanish Steps in Rome. It is one of the most well-known and successful social movements in the world that promotes a food culture revolution. The ultimate goal of the Slow Food movement is to promote local agriculture and economic development by encouraging consumers to prioritize local ingredients, use farming methods that avoid chemicals, preserve traditional cooking techniques, and protect local food cultures. The movement also emphasizes food quality, taste, and nutritional value, and works to establish seed banks and protect traditional and unique fruits and vegetables. It is the pioneer of the global “slow movement.”

The “International Cittaslow” initiative is a city plan promoted by the International Cittaslow Organization, which aims to integrate slow food, slow travel, and slow living into urban life. The goal is to slow down the pace of life for residents, reduce space waste, and minimize commuting time, thereby improving the quality of life. To become certified as an International Cittaslow, cities must meet seven main areas, eight agreements, and 72 indicators. These seven areas include: “Energy and Environmental Policies,” “Infrastructure Policies,” “Urban Appearance and Content,” “Encouraging Local Production and Use of Local Products,” “Friendly and Social Relationships,” “Creating Cittaslow Awareness,” and “Partnerships.” The movement advocates using modern technology to improve the environment and the quality of town life. Through adherence to the eight agreements, which include: “A population not exceeding 50,000,” “Commitment to protecting and maintaining a pristine natural environment,” “Promoting and implementing sustainable development technologies,” “Nurturing local culture and preserving local customs and cultural heritage,” “Encouraging healthy eating habits and lifestyles,” “Supporting local artisans and businesses,” “Warmly welcoming visitors,” and “Encouraging active participation in public activities and fostering civic consciousness,” the goal is to protect local traditions and cultures, and foster the development of regional characteristics.
